Amani Haven is dedicated to filling a critical gap in Scotland’s child welfare system by providing a culturally sensitive children’s accomodation for Black and ethnically diverse children and young people.

Our mission is to offer holistic care that not only meets their physical and emotional needs but also fosters pride in their cultural identities, providing an environment that values their heritage and supports their development.

Through tailored services and training we work with partnerships and local communities, and through systemic advocacy, we aim to address racism, cultural insensitivity, and trauma while empowering children and families to thrive.

Key Features of Amani Haven's Approach

  • Culturally Competent Care: Amani Haven will ensure that children and families receive support from professionals trained in cultural competence, anti-racism, and trauma-informed care. The care will be holistic, with respect for the cultural, religious, and familial backgrounds of every child.

  • Support for Cultural Practices: Facilities will be designed to support children in maintaining their cultural and religious practices, whether it’s dietary needs, language, or family traditions. This approach will help children retain their sense of identity while in care.

  • Community Engagement and Support: Amani Haven will partner with local Black and Brown community organisations to offer extended services such as mentorship programs, family support, and cultural activities. This will ensure children remain connected to their communities and have a supportive network outside of the home.

  • Language and Communication Support: Recognising the communication barriers highlighted in the report, Amani Haven will provide interpreters and multilingual staff to facilitate clear communication with families. This will help reduce misunderstandings and foster trust between social services and Black and Brown families.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Trauma-informed care practices will be at the core of Amani Haven’s approach, recognising the psychological impact of racism, displacement, and systemic inequalities. We will offer mental health support tailored to the experiences of Black and ethnically diverse children, ensuring their emotional well-being is prioritised.
